‘Naman’- His palindromic name
Which means ‘greeting’.
Bright-eyed, disheveled hair,
And 32 days
On the ventilator.
Head-end up, tracheostomy in situ,
One index finger stuffed,
Into the oximeter’s cocoon,
Which he still cannot not raise.
He looks at me, very curious
As I test his tone, his power, the absence of his reflexes,
As I scan his ECG traces
His errant autonomic system,
A jagged symphony of peaks and valleys.
Any moment he will sink yet again
Into an autonomic abyss,
And we will frantically deal
With the profound silence
Of his asystole.
Didi, can I have Frooti? He mouths today
I have been trying to lip-read his slack weak face
For ten minutes now
And I have to hide my smile.
That vivid orange syrup
Slides down his nasogastric tube,
Contrasting with his usual pale milky feeds.
He is ebullient, joyous at the sight,
And today we manage to soothe his craving body
