The moon used to be in your limpid eyes
Clear, strong, perfect
Growth charts used to declare satisfying normalcy
The vaccine nurse's lucky charm
She said you never cried, a godsend
Till that madness of a night, its fury,
You were so hot and small, a live coal, my arms burned
When we carried you to the ER
The seizing began soon after
So much energy in your tiny body
Fit after fit, day after day, pleomorphic, medusa-like,
A marvel, I thought, that a little brain
Could possess so much zeal
To perform.
Now we are on a blend of things
A fistful of drugs, a fat/protein-large diet for you
And a lifetime of patience
And a lot of learning to be still, for me
With these, I hope to offset
Your fiery activity
That Dravet kid, the doctors call you
I know it is you they are talking about
Seniors quizzing juniors
Name the gene, name the drugs, name the this-and-that.
You must be an oddity, a rarity
I try not to Google
Some idiosyncrasies even I should have, to match.
Some days are kind
Our evenings pass quietly into moonless dusk
Tonight, I can hear the leaves murmur sleepily
And the curtains yawn long.
And the neighborhood chatter-
The new supposed blockbuster is out now
But it is overhyped and a waste of money
I learn through them.
I don't read/watch TV/surf Instagram anymore
These are superficial things, things of froth and bubble
When one becomes a supreme hospital regular
As you and I are, and will continue to be.
